DETAILS
Ikat, originally from the Malay-Indonesian word mengikat meaning “to tie up,” is a resist dyeing technique where the warp yarns, weft yarns, or both warp and weft yarns - known as double ikat - are bound with tightly wrapped ikat tape and then dyed. Once the yarn is dipped and the tape is removed, the areas bound by tape reveal the undyed sections, and the yarns are then woven on the loom.
We will dye ikat weft yarns in class on day one, and work on our weavings, watching the ikat patterns emerge on day 2!
HOMEWORK
Students will need to come with their looms pre-warped at an EPI of 6 with 12” wide/ 60" long. Warp should be an 8/4 natural/white cotton or linen yarn. We have some in the shop or you can find other options online here.
Please bring 2 clamps, shuttles and clothes you don't mind getting dye on.
If you don't have your own loom, please rent loom. We will have it pre-warped for you.
