This class is for experienced inkle weavers. Students must know how to warp their looms on their own and be familiar and comfortable doing plain weave on the inkle loom.

MATERIALS (not included)

  • Inkle loom (preferably an open-sided standard loom. If you have a loom with warp and cloth beams, contact me prior to class to discuss.)
  • 30 heddles which fit your loom’s requirements (either string or texsolv)
  • Sharp scissors
  • Stick or belt shuttle (suggested length 6-8”)
  • Note-taking materials (paper + pen, OR students can take pictures if they prefer)
  • Non stretchy cotton yarn (size 3/DK): 3 colors with high contrast to each other in balls, cones or easy pull skeins and ready to use. We recommend Lamana Cosma or Gist Beam (we carry both in the shop)!

DETAILS

Annie MacHale, a weaver based in New Mexico, will be making a special trip to the studio to share her incredible inkle weaving knowledge! She has recently published two wonderful books on color and design for the inkle loom! Books will be available to purchase directly from her in class. Please bring cash or check.

The horizontal bar pickup technique is commonly used by indigenous weavers in North, Central and South America. We will look at woven samples to discover several variations on this technique and discuss charting methods. Students will warp their looms, and work with printed patterns to develop their own designs on the loom.

Annie will share tips for warping, making heddles, fixing mistakes, starting and stopping, and keeping selvages straight. She will also demonstrate how to temporarily remove and replace the warp, as well as how to cut the final project off the loom and handle it when it is complete.

As time and student interest allow, we can also explore a free online tool for creating patterns.

Finished bands are used as belts, bag or guitar straps, hat bands, keychains and more!
